Sappanwood (in Sanskrit, Kuchandana or Pattaranga) is classified as an herb that invigorates the blood. It is a tree found all over Sutheast Asia (from India through Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, southern China to Malaysia and the Philippines). Also known as East Indian redwood, it comes from a tree that has both ornamental and medicinal properties.

Slivers of heartwood are used for making herbal drinking water in various regions, such as Kerala and Central Java, where it is usually mixed with ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.

In Kerala, people traditionally drink a pink-coloured water with a deep, woody taste, called Pathimukham. This medicated drink is made by boiling water with shavings of sappanwood. This plant has many uses. It has antibacterial and anticoagulant properties.

The pale pink hue looks great when the water is poured into glasses. Squeeze a bit of lime into it and sweeten it with honey. Learn more…
